SOS Parkland Spring Fundraiser at Regina’s Farm 4/27/19

We have exciting news to announce – SOS Parkland’s next fundraiser will be held at Regina’s Farm this April 27th.  Those of you who have heard of Regina’s Farm know that it is extremely hard to get a reservation and if you tried now, you wouldn’t get in until Spring 2020!  Well, SOS Parkland invites you to a private event to be held at their farm for a special dinner that is one of a kind.  Dinner is served outside in the middle of their farm and is one of the most unique nights out you will ever experience in South Florida.  Regina’s Brazilian heritage and passion for food is evident in every part of this multi-course, all you can eat meal – and don’t pass up the pao de queijo (Cheese Bread)!

The environment is extremely kid friendly so what a great way to spend a Saturday night with your family and other Parkland families enjoying a hard to get reservation at Regina’s.  What’s even better is that Regina’s is a non-profit organization that gives back to the community so all of our event proceeds are going to SOS Parkland and their proceeds will go to other local charities.

Space is extremely limited so we encourage you to book your ticket as soon as possible! Be aware that your reservation is not logged until payment is received so, if the event is almost sold out when you register, we strongly recommend you pay via PayPal.

Family Friendly Football Fundraiser at Bru’s Room Coconut Creek

Join SOS Parkland at Bru’s Room for a family-friendly fundraiser. Have dinner with family and friends and the kids can play in the game room while you watch the game or just hang out.

Park Trails Elementary – Ballistic Protection Phase 1

While we have many things on the list of what we would like to get done in all of the schools in Parkland, due to the approval process and budgetary considerations, the work must be completed in several phases for each school. Today we are very pleased to announce that Phase 1 of the ballistic protection at Park Trails Elementary has now been completed. This phase was paid for via donations collected from SOS Parkland donors and the Park Trails Elementary School PTA.

We will continue to raise funds as quickly as possible to help fund the next phases and work with the Broward school district and school leadership to get approval of the recommended security measures to keep our kids safe.

Parkland school security update

The district has finally given approval for ballistic shielding to be added if private funding will pay for it. We are very happy to announce that we will be cutting a check to Park Trails PTA tomorrow to help fund this effort which can commence immediately.  This is only the first phase for Park Trails and Westglades is ready to begin as well. We look forward to working with other schools to provide the same.

With the approval of the the first phase of ballistic protection, we can finally start putting our monetary donations to work. That said  we have not gotten nearly enough cash donations to fully protect even one of the five public schools in Parkland, never mind all of them. We still require about $200,000 to complete this portion of the security measures. This may sound like a lot of money, but if every parent in Parkland made even a modest donation, this could be raise easily!

In addition to monetary donations, we have received equipment donations which have yet to be accepted by the school board. We truly hope they will accept the donations that we have worked so hard to get and our vendor contacts have so generously offered. Many people have asked what the hold up is since we had offers of equipment donations months ago. Unfortunately, we do not have an answer because we are at the mercy of the current school board to allow us to pass along the donations.

We will continue to work on getting all of the needed security measures approved and implemented, but we need the help of the whole community to raise the money needed to pay for the items that have not been donated.

Camera donation for our schools

At the end of April, a local video camera manufacturer generously offered to donate whatever cameras were needed to give our schools full coverage. The donation included high end, commercial grade analytic cameras that can be used to detect threats  and thwart would-be incidents. The cameras were tested by the manufacturer of the existing video systems that are in all of the Broward County Schools. They confirmed the compatibility in the middle of June. One hundred cameras were picked up on August 9th and should be installed very soon along with other donated camera gear, some of which was donated and some purchased.

Monster Mini Golf School Security Fundraiser

Please join us at Monster Mini Golf (Coral Springs / Parkland) for a family night of fun and games. You can learn more about our efforts for better school security (for all of Broward County) and play some mini golf. Funds are being raised to help pay for school security improvements at the 5 public schools located in Parkland.


June SOS Meeting recap and new donors

We had a great meeting at the beautiful Watercrest clubhouse, courtesy of our friend Lori Alhadeff, who fights this fight right along side us. Lori was unable to attend due to a dedication ceremony for her daughter Alyssa. Ryan Petty stopped by to graciously voice his support and say a few words to the group of parents concerned with local school security.

We were very happy to meet many first time attendees and share our mission of securing our schools. After sharing updates on our school security assessments, we had a very productive Q&A session and garnered some new support. I would like to extend particular thanks to Jon Faber who called for all attendees to donate and generously offered to match all donations made during the meeting, up to $1,000! Well, guess what! SOS parents in the group heard his call and stepped up by donating on the spot. Not only did we raise the $1,000, which Jon then doubled, bringing us to $2,000, but we raised several hundred additional dollars!

Because school security is an ongoing expense, we are requesting that all parents set up a recurring donation to help fund ongoing school security efforts on a perpetual basis. We are very pleased to report that 4 of our donors at the meeting have chosen to set up a monthly recurring donation. This now makes 9 Parkland families who have committed to a perpetual monthly donation. This is good start, but all of us should donate monthly because none of us can afford not to.

May 1st – Heron Bay Meeting Recap

We had a great group meeting with over 100 attendees including several family members of victims from the MSD shooting. At this event we featured one of the vendors, Intralogic Solutions, who has offered to donate a full security system including lockdown software. Additionally, IC Realtime has offered to donate high end surveillance cameras to help get our schools more secure.  We have also received numerous other offers from product and service providers to help with our cause and we are working diligently, in collaboration with Safe Schools for Alex to sort through the options.
